Roan horses have white hairs intermingled with their base coat, though the extremities of the horse (head, legs, mane, and tail) will keep their original color. Unlike greys and varnish roans, true roans' white hairs will remain consistent throughout their life. In chestnut horses, roan creates strawberry, lilac, and honey roans.
The white hairs in a roan coat will not grow back in white if they are damaged, resulting in what is called "corn marks" on many roan horses.
Roan is a KIT gene.

Genes that are in bold are active on the coat. Genes that are underlined are genes that the horse may carry, but will have no visible effect on the coat.
