Both blanket (or spotted blanket) and snowcap appaloosas are products of the PATN2 alleles, and like PATN1, it requires LP (varnish roan) to be active to be visible. A horse with PATN2 and heterozygous for LP will be a blanket appaloosa, while a horse with homozygous LP will be a snowcap.
Blanket appaloosas have a distinctive spotting pattern which is usually limited to the back and hindquarters.
